Cheques a knock out boost for boxing club

23 November 2007

The newly formed Ludlow Amateur Boxing Club is off to a flying start after receiving £1,000 boost from South Shropshire Housing Association (SSHA)

SSHA is the latest organisation to declare its support for the club, which has been set up by West Mercia Police Officer Tony Sewell as a way of bringing young people together.

Ludlow Town Council has given the club a five-year lease on the room in the former guide hut, Shropshire District Council has awarded the club a £1000 regeneration grant and West Mercia Police Community Fund has met the set up costs.

SSHA is the area’s largest not-for-profit landlord, and Chairman, Neville Stephens, said: “The project has many positive aspects including health and fitness, discipline, social inclusion as well as community well being.

“I am delighted that this facility is having a real impact on local youngsters – and not just the boys either!

“SSHA owns a substantial number of homes in this part of the town and it’s important that our families and young people have opportunities to engage in sporting activities. We hope our contribution will help the Club to thrive.”
