Craven Arms Community Garden Planting Day.
29 May 2009
Work to improve the layout of
Craven
Arms
Community
Garden
and make it fully accessible has
just been completed thanks to a Shropshire Council Community Fund grant.
The £15,000 grant has meant that community volunteers and a local contractor have been able to construct raised beds that can be cultivated by people with restricted mobility, and add a finish to the paths making them suitable for wheel chair use.
A picnic area with wheelchair accessible garden furniture constructed from local oak has been installed as well as a decking viewing point looking out to Norton woods.
The grant was also used to improve some of the Onny Meadow paths so there is now an ‘all ability’ route from the Discovery Centre, through the garden and back round to the centre.
Helen Vaughan
, Regeneration Officer at South Shropshire Housing Association who has managed the development of the garden told us:
‘The finishing touch for this phase will be to plant up the garden and sow a meadow seed mix like the one that provided such a splendid show in the garden through out last year; it was hard work but good fun last year. We’ve now got a lot more people interested in having a plot and growing their own vegetables so I hope people will come along and help. Future plans include creating a bog garden and a central gazebo.
South Shropshire
Youth Forum’s Green Team hope to be back this summer to do this’.
