Social landlord shortlisted for national award

21 September 2009

A ground-breaking development of new homes has earned South Shropshire Housing Association a nomination in high profile environmental building awards.

The Rocks Green site, near Ludlow, features 91 extremely energy-efficient properties which receive their heating and hot water from an eco-friendly biomass boiler.

This initiative has now been recognised by the Sustainable Housing Awards 2009 with the site shortlisted in the Sustainable Larger Social Housing Project of the Year category.

The awards are organised by Inside Housing Magazine and the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Heating and hot water for the Rocks Green homes is generated by burning wood chips from locally-sourced timber.

The eco-friendly heating system is a major contributor to the new homes achieving an ‘excellent’ environmental rating, under the Eco Homes scale. They also have under floor heating which, along with the hot water supply, tenants and homeowners are able to control according to their individual needs.

Managing director of South Shropshire Housing Association, Paul Sutton, said: “A lot of time and careful planning went into creating a responsible and sustainable development at Rocks Green. This is of tremendous benefit to the tenants and homeowners who live there, as well as to the community as a whole.

“We’re delighted that this has been recognised with a nomination for these prestigious awards and hope, on behalf of everyone who worked on the project, that it translates into SSHA walking away with the title! It’s vitally important that social landlords lead the way on sustainable homes and Rocks Green demonstrates what can be done.”

The awards ceremony will take place on October 23, at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, London.
