Night under the stars planned for charity

30 November 2009

Residents of Ludlow’s Foyer  for young people are to abandon their beds for a night in aid of Children in Need.

In what they describe as a “moment of madness” a number of staff and residents from the Foyer, in Portcullis Lane, have opted to set up camp outside the centre on Thursday night.

Supported by fund-raising pledges the group are aiming to highlight the issue of youth homelessness, while backing the BBC charity.

Ludlow Foyer, in Portcullis Lane, is a 15-bed residential centre that provides a supportive environment to support and assist young people in moving towards independent lives.

It is part of a network of 130 such centres accredited by the Foyer Federation across the UK and is supported by South Shropshire Housing Association.

Foyer manager, Kim Skinner, explained: “We anticipate a long and cold night ahead! We’ve been asking for donations of old blankets and sleeping bags to keep everyone warm and we are also trying to get our hands on a source of heating, such as a brazier or some firewood.

“There will be at least four staff spending the night outside and as many residents as can bring themselves to give up the warmth of their beds! It’s all in a good cause and we welcome any more pledges from anyone who would like to support us and Children in Need.”

Ludlow Foyer offers a number of skills to its residents, as part of individual training plans, ranging from basic food hygiene to nail art, as well as leisure opportunities such as gym membership, swimming, walking, group work and the chance to demonstrate initiative and produce individual work.

Those taking the courses can work towards a City and Guilds Learning Power Award.
