Affordable homes boost for Ditton Priors

30 March 2010

The start of work on seven new affordable homes in Ditton Priors near Bridgnorth, has been signalled with a ceremonial turf cutting ceremony.

The new properties are to be built by South Shropshire Housing Association, as part of the organisations first project in the Bridgnorth area.

All of the homes will be reserved for renting by people with connections to Ditton Priors, allowing families to stay together in the area, rather than being priced out by the housing market.

Councillor Malcolm Price, portfolio holder for housing at Shropshire Council, turned the first sod, giving the green light for the £483,000 project to get under way.

The scheme is being jointly funded by the Homes and Communities Agency and Shropshire Council as part of a rural affordable housing initiative.

Paul Sutton, who is Executive Director for Assets and Development at Shropshire Housing Group, said: "This is another important development in delivering Shropshire Housing Group's promise to continue providing affordable homes that build on existing communities.

"Helping people to stay in the towns and villages where they grew up, or where they already have family, is crucial and these new homes will be very important to Ditton Priors in that regard. The community has been very supportive which has made this a great partnership project."

The new homes are due to be completed by October this year and will consist of three two-bedroom houses, two three-bedroom houses and two bungalows, each with two bedrooms. The contractor is Harpers of Leominster.

South Shropshire Housing Association is part of Shropshire Housing Group, based at Craven Arms, which also includes Meres and Mosses Housing Association, in North Shropshire, and property maintenance firm, Total Response Limited.
