South Shropshire Housing Association provides the homelessness service on behalf of South Shropshire District Council.
The legal responsibility for dealing with homelessness in this area lies with the District Council. The legislation covering homelessness is contained in the Homelessness Act 2002.
What does homelessness mean?
You are homeless or threatened with homelessness if you:
- Have nowhere to live in the UK or anywhere else in the world.
- Cannot live at home because of threats of violence or actual violence.
- Have nowhere else you can live together with all your family.
- Live in a boat or mobile home and you are not allowed back in or have nowhere to leave it.
- Have somewhere to live, but it is not reasonable for you to remain there.
‘Threatened with homelessness’ means that you are likely to become homeless in 28 days.
SSHA can help you in various ways. Firstly you will be interviewed by the Homelessness Officer who will try to help you to keep your home. The officer will also assess your situation by asking you some straightforward questions about your circumstances.
SSHA will aim to complete all its enquiries within 30 working days from the time it accepts it may have a duty to you as a homeless person. If this proves impossible the Association will write to you and inform you. When the enquiries are complete the Association will give you a written decision within 3 working days.
Temporary Accommodation
If we have reason to believe that you may be in priority need we can arrange some temporary accommodation for you if you have nowhere else to stay. During this period you will be able to bid for permanent accommodation within the Association’s own stock or be nominated to another Housing Association.
